The Regina Pats dropped a back and forth affair to the Red Deer Rebels 3-2 in overtime at the Brandt Centre Sunday afternoon.

The game was scoreless after one, and tied at one after two, before a late Red Deer goal forced some late heroics by Pats captain Austin Pratt, who tied the game at two with 41 seconds left.

Pats goaltending coach Rob Muntain said it was one of those games they deserved to win.

“It was one that we definitely deserved, we’ve talked all week about being better with puck battles and winning puck battles and we did that tonight,” said Muntain. “Unfortunately when the other team scores three goals that your goalie would probably like to have back, you’re not going win,” he added.

One of the bright spots was forward Zach Smith, who scored his first career WHL goal in the second period.

Smith believes they can build off this strong outing and get back in the win column.

“Yeah I think we played a pretty solid game overall, we stuck to the game plan well but just didn’t get the bounces, so we’re just going to try and build off that,” Smith said.

The Pats (2-11-2-0) will be back at it Friday night when they host Swift Current (3-9-1-2).
