A coronavirus variant of concern first identified in India last year has reached Saskatchewan with five of them now in the province.
The province made the announcement in its daily COVID-19 update which shows 227 new cases with 133 new variants of concern and two new deaths.

The two who died are someone in their 40’s from the south-central zone and someone in their 70’s from the Saskatoon zone and brings the provincial death toll to 515.
The new cases are located in the following zones: Far North West, 2; Far North Central, 1; Far North East, 1; North West, 18; North Central, 17; North East, 7; Saskatoon, 50; Central West, 5; Central East, 10; Regina, 41; South West, 15; South Central, 20; and South East, 36.
There are 149 people in hospital. That is a drop of 12 from Thursday’s update and is down from a total of 203 on April 14. Of the 149, 34 are in intensive care.
The seven-day average of new cases sits at 203.
Almost 8,000 vaccines were delivered Thursday with over half of those occurring in Saskatoon and Regina. Those 23 and over are now eligible to get vaccinated. That age limit drops to 20 and over on Sunday.
