It wasn’t a dominating victory, but Team Canada opened up with a 5-2 win over Lativa in their opening game of the World Juniors in Edmonton.
The Regina Pats Connor Bedard opened up the scoring for Canada to get an early lead.
Latvia would not go away easily, as they tied the game, leaving the score deadlocked at one apiece after the opening 20 minutes.
Canada would pull away with three goals in the second period to carry over a 4-1 lead into the final frame.
Latvia cut the deficit to a pair of goals in the third before Canada pulled away with a goal to end things off.
Bedard ended up with a goal and an assist in the win.
The Canadian squad returns to the ice on Thursday where they will face Slovakia.
