Sask harvest reaches 1 percent complete

The latest Saskatchewan crop report says harvest is one percent complete.

Provincial crops extension specialist Matt Struthers says combining is mainly limited to the southwest and west central regions of the province.

He says harvest is behind the 5 year average of 2 percent.

Last year, harvest was at seven percent for this date.

He says areas with rain this past week include Weyburn at 25 millimeters, Rosthern and Hague 35 millimeters, and 61 millimeters in Macklin and 71 millimeters near Prince Albert.

Cropland topsoil moisture is rated 3 percent surplus, 58 percent adequate, 24 percent short and 15 percent very short.

Haying operations are wrapping up with yields average or above average in eastern and northern areas and below average in the southwest and west central regions.

Estimated average yield for wild hay is one ton per acre.

The main causes of crop loss this past week was wind, heavy rain, hail, drought, heat, wildlife and grasshoppers.

There was a light frost in the northwest but no crop damage was reported.
