Saskatoon family overwhelmed with support after apparent racial attack at Bishop Mahoney Field

Nelson Chen, the father of a teenage boy who was allegedly attacked on Friday afternoon, in what Mr. Chen believes was racially motivated, says their family is overwhelmed by the support seen on social media.

“We are deeply touched by your love, your encouragement, and your unwavering stance against racism. Your compassion and your humanity have spread faster than anything, even COVID-19. In this age of social distancing, we are feeling evermore connected to the people around us than ever before.”

Mr. Chen, who indicates he and his wife moved to Saskatoon 30 years ago says that thanks to the quick thinking of his son, who recorded the attack and the power of social media, the attacker was identified and they are working with Saskatoon Police on what the next steps are.

On Friday afternoon, the 15 year old, younger Chen, was out for a bike ride at Bishop Mahoney Field when an unknown male started to curse and yelled racial slurs at the boy and blamed him for “spreading the virus”. The boy was allegedly pushed off his bike, punched in his helmet, tackled but got away without physical injuries.

Saskatoon Police have released the following:

“We are aware of a video circulating online of an alleged assault between two people that occurred in a park, and some of the details surrounding the incident. We can confirm we have received a police report and are investigating. Both of the involved parties have been identified and spoken with. At this preliminary stage, no charges have been laid. We are continuing to investigate.”
