APAS welcomes new wheat straw plant for Regina

Saskatchewan’s general farm group welcomes the announcement of a $350-million wheat straw processing plant in Regina.

Red Leaf Pulp says the plant will have capacity to produce 182,000 tons of market pulp a year from straw.

APAS president Todd Lewis says the facility offers farmers a marketing opportunity for waste wheat straw.

He is not surprised Regina was selected, pointing to the area as a prime wheat growing region for the prairies.

He says the economy will see a big benefit from the sale of waste wheat straw.

The plant will be operational by 2023 and produce paper towels, tissue and cardboard.
