Early indications are that there may be less crop left in the field in Saskatchewan over winter this year than there was in 2016.

Last Friday was the deadline to extend crop insurance coverage through the winter to next spring.

Crop Insurance Corporation President Sean Jaques says there were about 3,200 extension requests from producers as of last Friday, covering 1.2-million acres.

He expects that number to grow.

He says the worst hit area is east of a line from Saskatoon to Regina to the Manitoba border, but there are unharvested pockets throughout the grainbelt.

In 2016, there were more extension requests covering about 1.6-million acres.

As for crop insurance claims, the number of registered claims sits at 5,800, but Jacques expects that number to rise.

Last year, there were 8,000 claims and in 2016, the total was 10 thousand.
