Highest winds from Saturday spotted in southeastern Sask. as rainy weekend continues

It was quite the rainy and windy day in many parts of Saskatchewan on Saturday as wind gusts reached 80 to 90 kilometres per hour.

Environment Canada meteorologist David Baggaley said the most aggressive wind speeds were in the southeastern corner of the province.

“The whole Wascana basin was quite windy yesterday. The Regina Airport reported a gust of 91 km/h. But the strongest wind was actually down in Estevan where they had a gust of 104 km/h,” shared Baggaley.

In terms of rainfall, Baggaley said a large shield of rain was pushing through the west central and central parts of the province early Sunday morning where the highest rain totals were recorded.

Kindersley picked up about 30 millimetres at around 7:00 a.m. CST, whereas Rosetown reported over 40 millimetres.

The rainy weekend won’t be stopping there for much of the province as a series of low pressure systems means more rain over the next couple days. Baggaley said there’s even a chance thunderstorms could develop.

“It’s probably a fairly serious weather system coming through. So keep an eye to the sky as usual.”

He expects seasonal weather will return later this week in Regina with temperatures into the mid-twenties.
