Yorkton’s mayor is questioning a Maclean’s magazine article that puts the city in 15th spot on a list of Canada’s most dangerous places.
Bob Maloney said it comes down to reporting the crime indices where Statistics Canada pegged Yorkton at a severity index of 151.
“How much is reported, the kind of reports that come in – but you don’t want to make light of it,” stated Maloney. “I’ll be talking to our RCMP detachment about trends we should be keeping an eye on and where do we go from here.”
As an example, he said three teenagers breaking into a garage is a reportable crime, which would go into the index. For Maloney, he thinks the numbers can be a little misleading to the public.
“If there’s a homicide in your community, and you didn’t have one last year, you’re up a hundred per cent.”
He believes Yorkton is still a safe community despite the report and feels residents would agree with him.
Other Saskatchewan cities on the list include North Battleford at #2 and Prince Albert at #4.
