Buck Owens was in the middle of a two week ride at number one on this day in 1964 with “Together Again.” It’s said the steel guitar solo inspired Jerry Garcia to learn how to play the instrument. Garcia would then go on to co-found The Grateful Dead.
Johnny Rodriguez was at number one on this day in 1973 with “You Always Come Back Hurting Me.” He was 21 at the time, making him the youngest male artist ever to get a number one country song. A record that was held until 2012 when Hunter Hayes reached number one with “Wanted.”
Kenny Rogers found himself at the top of the country chart on June 9th, 1979 with “She Believes in Me.” It would stay number one for two weeks.
Merle haggard scored his 31st number one hit 36 years ago with a song he wrote with his wife at the time, Leona Williams. “Someday When Things are Good.” stayed at number one for one week.
Dan Seals was number one this week in 1987 with “I Will be There.”
George Strait started a five week ride at number one on this day in 1990 with “Love Without End, Amen.” It would be his first multi-week chart topper and his 19th number one overall.
Paul Brandt reached the top of the charts in Canada starting on June 9th, 1997 with “Take it From Me.”
