Work moves ahead on Sask field hospitals for possible surge in COVID-19 cases

The Saskatchewan Health Authority says work is going ahead on field hospitals in preparation for an increase in COVID-19 patients.

The field hospitals will be at EVRAZ Place in Regina and Merlis Belsher Place in Saskatoon.

The Health Authority says both hospitals need to be ready to open within a few short weeks of hitting pre-determined trigger points.

Between them, the two hospitals will have room for 304 COVID-19 positive patients who require hospitalization but do not have a severe form of the illness.

As health services resume after being temporary suspended due to the pandemic, the two field hospitals will ensure additional capacity in the event of a surge in COVID-19 cases.

Many health experts are concerned a second wave of infection could happen in the fall.

The field hospitals will have large open areas to easily see patients and patients will mostly use cots.
