Final report released on fatal accident at Melville CN Rail yard

The Transportation Safety Board of Canada has released its final report into a fatal accident at the CN rail yard in Melville.

On December 22nd, 2017, 26 year-old Melissa Heins was kicking three cars up a short ascending grade, when she noticed they had stopped and begun to roll back uncontrolled.

She jumped aboard the leading car and attempted to apply the hand brake when they collided corner to corner with a stationary train, catching her between the cars.

The TSB is recommending that rail workers reduce the number of uncontrolled movements in rail yards that don’t involve air brakes.
