Seeding virtually complete across Sask in latest crop report

The latest Saskatchewan crop report says seeding is virtually complete across the province.

Seeding is 99 percent complete in the southeast and southwest, 98 percent in east central, west central and northwest regions and 97 percent in the northeast.

A few fields are being seeded for green feed and silage.

Most regions had some rain, with the northwest and west central areas receiving a substantial amount.

The rain was welcome although there was some localized flooding.

The area around St. Walburg, 500 kilometers northwest of Regina, had the highest amount of rain at 154 millimeters or over 6 inches.

Topsoil moisture has improved with 5 percent surplus, 74 percent adequate, 20 percent short and one percent very short.

Dry conditions have delayed emergence of some crops like canola and flax.

22 percent of fall-seeded crops are in the heading stage.

The majority of crop damage this week was due to strong winds, dry soil, insects like flea beetles and cutworms as well as localized flooding in west-central and northwest regions.

Some farmers are re-seeding due to flea beetle and cutworm damage.
