I know we’re in the midst of a cold snap, but really, this hasn’t been that bad of a winter. I don’t mind the cold temperatures. The only thing I dislike about winter is having lots of snow and trying to get from point A to Point B in that snow. So, from that viewpoint, things haven’t been that bad. There are many others that feel differently.
Farmers are looking for a lot of moisture to kick off the spring and the only way to get it is to get a lot of snow right now. Businesses that sell winter gear or winter sporting equipment could never get enough snow. Private contactors that clear the snow and shovel the walks would be happy if it snowed everyday. People who love to go out and ski or snowmobile are hoping for a lot more snow as well. Colonel Sanders of KFC fame once said, “There’s no such thing as bad weather. Just different kinds of good weather.” I couldn’t have said it better myself.
I haven’t been an outdoor winter person since I was a kid. Back then I would think nothing of shoveling the snow off an entire street in -30 weather just so we could play some street hockey. We’d be out there all day. We didn’t want to go inside. Those days are long gone. I sure wish I enjoyed being outdoors during the winter like I did back then. It would sure make the season go by a lot quicker.
There is no such thing as a weather forecast that pleases everybody. I guess it gives us something to complain about when it’s not the type of weather we like. I still remember one of my high school teachers, Mrs. Majors, telling us that if we were going to complain about anything, it might as well be about the weather. Her theory was that you should never complain about something you have the power to change. True enough.
I had no idea what she was talking about way back then, but I sure do now.
