Travelers can expect delays on Arcola Avenue as the sewer renewal project begins tomorrow

The City of Regina is set to begin a $3.6 million sewer relining project along Arcola Aveneau between Apple Grove Drive and Houston Road.

The ‘Arcola Avenue Sewer Renewal’ is a significant project that will extend the life of the pipe for another 50 years through sewer relining.

“Sewer relining is a cost-effective way to renew underground infrastructure without digging up our roads which saves money and time and reduces the impact on residents and businesses,” the city said.

The Arcola Avenue trunk is a major sewer pipe that provides wastewater services to 30,000 people in Regina’s southeast area.

“A temporary wastewater bypass system will operate throughout the day and night to ensure area residents can still flush their toilets, have a shower and do laundry without interruption throughout the project.”

The system is powered by generators that must run 24 hours a day, and nearby residents may hear them running over the next seven weeks.

Work will start on Monday, September 19, along Arcola Avenue, with residents expected to see traffic delays throughout the day.

Phase one with a start on September 19 and last three weeks

  • September 19 – Daytime restriction on Arcola westbound lanes near Prince of Wales Drive
  • September 20 – Overnight restriction – Arcola westbound closed and two-way traffic on eastbound lanes between Prince of Wales Drive and Doan/Edinburgh Drive
  • From September 21 to October 7 – Arcola westbound lanes will cross a “ramp crossing” over the bypass pipe between Prince of Wales Drive and Doan/Edinburgh Drive, with no lane restrictions

Phase two will start on October 7 for approximately four weeks

  • Traffic restrictions will be provided as the work progresses.

The City noted that all efforts would be made to mitigate noise between 11 p.m. and 7 a.m., and residents might experience a slight chemical smell during a curing project.

The City said that this is not hazardous and should dissipate quickly.
