Sask. farmers welcome federal investment in new pea and canola plant in Winnipeg

Saskatchewan Pulse Growers welcome federal support of a major new pea and canola protein processing plant in Winnipeg.

Prime Minister Trudeau has announced $100-million will be invested in the new Merit Functional Food location.

Saskatchewan Pulse Growers past chair Lee Moats supports the investment because it helps diversify sales from high tariff markets like India.

Trudeau says more people are eating plant-based protein and the processing facility for peas and canola will benefit farmers.

Moats says any effort to diversify and expand markets is welcome.

The Merit Food plant is expected to process 10,000 tons of yellow peas and 17,000 tons of canola seed in its first year.
