Sask harvest reaches 81 percent complete

The latest Saskatchewan crop report says harvest is at 81 percent complete.

Harvest is up from 73 percent last week and ahead of the five year average of 75 percent.

Provincial crops extension specialist Matt Struthers says harvest ranges from 98 percent in the southwest to 65 percent in east central areas.

Harvest is mostly complete in the southwest while many farmers in eastern and northern areas are waiting for canola to drop down.

The Bienfait and Melfort areas received 35 millimeters of rain this past week, while Calder had 14 millimeters.

Topsoil moisture is rated one percent surplus, 34 percent adequate, 35 percent short and 30 percent very short.

Some areas have moderate to severe on-farm water shortages and producers are hauling water, drilling new wells or bringing livestock closer to home.

The main causes of crop loss this past week was due to wind, waterfowl and wildlife.

Wind continues to blow swaths around, shelling out crops and causing lodging.
