Tony Fiacco announces second mayoral bid for 2020 Regina election

A familiar face announced himself as the first candidate in the 2020 Regina mayoral race.

Tony Fiacco, brother of former mayor Pat Fiacco and 2016 mayoral candidate, announced his campaign Saturday.

Fiacco says that he learned some lessons from his last campaign and will have a different approach this time around.

“We’re going to be showing what we truly have to offer to the citizens of Regina,” said Fiacco. “I believe that, currently, we have a complacent city council and they’re not tackling the issues that need to be tackled.”

When asked about how Regina has changed since his last campaign, Fiacco said that it has only gotten worse.

“Our policing is in worse shape and has more stress on it, our infrastructure hasn’t improved, and we’ve got higher taxes,” said Fiacco.

Fiacco says one major issue facing the city is drugs and crime. He says one of the things he would do as mayor is work with Indigenous and other community leaders to help find the source of the problem, so that it can be addressed.

On top of dealing with the drug problem, Fiacco says he has other areas of focus.

“I’ll listen to the citizens of Regina, and work to change the culture,” said Fiacco. “I would concentrate on the Heritage Centre, the downtown, which is dying, and the North Central community, which nothing has been done to improve it.”

Fiacco says that he wanted to be the first candidate to throw their hat in the ring because, he wants to have the chance to better connect with the people of Regina.
