The Regina Police Canine Unit was called in early Saturday morning to help bring a man from the Regina area into custody after he was involved in an assault.

Thirty-four-year-old Joshua Nahnepowisk has been charged with assault causing bodily harm and failure to comply with condition of a release order.

Police officers were sent just before midnight on Friday to the 1000 block of Robinson Street for a report of a weapons offence. Early information suggested a man had been assaulted at the location and that a bladed weapon was involved.

Regina Police Service also noted in a release on Monday that the victim said he was at the 3500 block of Fifth Avenue at the time of the call. Officers found the man at the Fifth Avenue address with minor injuries. He was treated by paramedics at the scene.

Patrol members and the RPS Canine Unit went to the location of the alleged assault at Robinson Street where they saw Nahnepowisk fleeing the home on foot. Police created a perimeter and the canine team found Nahnepowisk in a nearby yard. He was bitten by a Canine Unit dog in the process of his arrest and was taken to hospital for treatment.

Nahnepowisk made his first court appearance on Monday morning.
