Canada-U.S. border to remain closed until July 21

The Prime Minister says the border with the U.S will remain closed until at least July 21st.

Justin Trudeau says with the situation in the U.S and other areas continuing with high case loads, the country needs to remain vigilant.

“We will continue to assess the situation and work with the Americans on what steps need to be taken into the month of August.”

Trudeau admits the federal response to the pandemic could have been better.  The Prime Minister says there are things they would have done differently, and sooner.

“We spent very little time analyzing, wishing we’d done things differently,” Trudeau said. “Those reflections are ongoing, and will continue to be ongoing so that we’re better positioned for a potential second wave and moving forward.”

Trudeau also says a new NAFTA deal will take effect Wednesday. Trudeau says one remaining sore spot is tariffs on Canadian aluminum.

“The United States needs Canadian aluminum,” Trudeau said. “They do not produce enough, nowhere near enough aluminum in the States to be able to fill their domestic manufacturing needs.”

The Prime Minister says if they slap tariffs on Canadian exports, the U.S will be hurting their own manufacturing base and economy.

Trudeau also says daily briefings by federal officials will now shift to a few times per week.
