Regina-based Protein Industries Canada has launched an 11 million dollar project to make plant-based cheese products.

C.E.O. Bill Gruel says B.C.-based Lumi Foods and Save On Foods are partnering in a project to turn oats, legumes and pulses into cheese-like products.

Lumi Foods is hoping to use oats and pulses instead of cashews and almonds in its plant-based cheese products.

Gruel says consumer interest in plant-based cheese products is growing.

Gruel is hoping to see plant-based cheese products made from prairie crops in about one year.
