The Saskatchewan NDP are calling on the provincial government to address the state of water quality in Saskatchewan, and to implement a provincial Wetland Policy.
Environment Critic Erika Ritchie says during heatwaves like this the first thing people want to do is hit the lake, but unfortunately due to mismanagement, many people can’t do so safely.
“With (toxic) algae blooms beginning earlier in the city, lasting longer, and resulting in toxin levels above recreational advisory levels,” said Ritchie. “That means families can’t go out and enjoy all that this beautiful province has to offer.”
Ritchie says the longer the government waits to address the issue the worse it’s going to get, possibly putting more people at risk.
According to Ritchie, Saskatchewan is the only province in the country that doesn’t have a wetlands policy, adding there’s no excuse to have one.
“This government needs to develop a wetland policy to preserve wetland habitat and improve surface water quality,” said Ritchie. “Work with municipalities, as an equal partner, on a plan to address storm water runoff and immediately begin to fully implement the Provincial Auditor’s recommendations.”
Ritchie says Saskatchewan is known for its beautiful lakes and rivers and if the government doesn’t step in soon, that could no longer be the case.
“Water is essential for human health, recreation, the health of ecosystem, and our economy,” said Ritchie. “We live in one of the most environmentally beautiful areas of the world, and this government is failing to protect it for future generations.”
