Libraries in Regina re-open after four-month shutdown due to COVID-19

Some branches of the Regina Public Library opened their doors Thursday for the first time since March 16th.

Smaller branches like the Glen Elm, Regent Place, Albert, Connaught and Prince of Wales libraries were able to open today, while the bigger libraries such as Central, Sherwood Village, Sunrise and George Bothwell branches will re-open on Monday.

RPL Director and CEO Jeff Barber says there are some things people will notice when they return to the library.

“People will notice — certainly as they walk in — floor plans are different, the look of the library will be different,” Barber said. “In following the guidelines from the province and guidelines for libraries in particular that were also issued, we made some changes to our locations; changes to some of how of our services will be offered and which will be offered.”

Barber said while libraries are opening, online services are still available.

“We’ve had in some of our more standard services 150,000 e-books, audio books, magazines, movies and TV shows streamed by our customers,” Barber said. “Those increases are in the range, on average, of about 50% increase in digital use through our closure period.”

Curbside pickup is also being extended to Monday at all branches.
