Final crop report says Sask harvest is virtually complete

The final crop report this season from the Saskatchewan ministry of Agriculture says harvest is virtually complete across the grainbelt.

Provincial crops extension specialist Matt Struthers says only a few fields of flax and canola remain to be combined.

He says yields varied greatly across the province.

He says yields in eastern and northern regions were much improved and many producers had above average production.

The biggest impact on yields this year were drought, gophers, wind and drowned out crops in the spring.

Average yields are being estimated as 44 bushels an acre for red spring wheat, 31 bushels for durum, 93 bushels for oats, 64 bushels for barley, 36 bushels for canola, 34 bushels for peas and 1,165 pounds per acre for lentils.

Most crops are in the top two grades.

Producers are hoping for fall and winter moisture.

Topsoil mosture is rated 22 percent adequate, 35 percent short and 43 percent very short.

Seeding of winter wheat was down 23 percent and fall rye dropped 17 percent this autumn due to dry weather.
