Sask Stock Growers seek immediate government drought aid

The Saskatchewan Stock Growers Association is calling for immediate government action to assist livestock producers facing extreme drought.

President Kelcy Elford of Caronport says widespread drought has led to feed and water supply shortages.

He’s worried about a sizable herd reduction, which could reach 40 percent in the worst-hit areas.

Elford is calling for a declaration of a drought disaster to trigger the Agri-recovery program.

He also wants to extend the tax deferral for 5 years for cattle sold due to drought.

Elford is also calling for improved government funding of farm water development programs.
