Saskatchewan pork producers are looking for government support to avoid a herd sell-off this winter due to drought.

The cattle industry in Saskatchewan will receive close to 300 million dollars to help producers pay for feed to avoid a herd sell-off this fall.

SaskPork general manager Mark Ferguson says hog producers are facing similar issues with costs up 50 to 60 percent due to drought.

He says pork producers lost crops intended for feed due to drought and will be facing some tough decisions on whether to liquidate herds or buy expensive feed from the U.S.

Cattle producers are getting 200 dollars a head for cows and Ferguson says the hog equivalent would be about 66 dollars per sow.

Ferguson says the total cost in Saskatchewan would be about 6.6 million dollars.
