The Saskatchewan health ministry is reminding residents to remain on the look-out for ticks on themselves and pets during the fall season.

In this province, any ticks found in the fall are likely to be blacklegged ticks, which can cause Lyme disease.

Residents are advised to check for ticks after walking through tall grass, and use insect repellent.

Between the start of the year and the end of August, the on-line eTick received 840 valid tick submissions, with only one identified as a blacklegged tick, which is rare in this province.

Most ticks in Saskatchewan are American dog ticks. That species is active from mid-April to the end of July and is not capable of transmitting Lyme disease to humans.

The number of ticks this year is much lower than previous years, likely due to cooler spring temperatures and a hot dry summer.
