Regina Transit is taking extra measures to enforce mask use on city buses and paratransit starting on Wednesday, October 28.

The city shared in a public service announcement on Tuesday that buses will be randomly checked for compliance of the city’s mask mandate on transit. Riders who refuse to wear a mask will be asked to leave the bus.

“These immediate enforcement measures are being put in place instead of passing a formal bylaw, which would take time to create, pass, and establish enforcement protocols,” reads the announcement from the city.

“Through increased distribution, communication and enforcement, Regina Transit will continue efforts to achieve 100 per cent compliance, respecting those individuals who are medically exempt as well as young children under five years of age.”

Masks became mandatory on Queen City transit on August 31, however the city has stated in the past how there have been some instances when passengers have continued to ride buses without wearing a mask or face covering.

The city has made efforts to distribute masks at key transit locations over the past several weeks to encourage mask use on buses and paratransit units. Last week, there was increased distribution to 10 locations across the city during peak ridership times.

According to the city, 99 per cent of passengers who receive masks at these locations use the mask.
