The Regina Police Service is reminding visitors and residents to intercept crime this weekend during the Grey Cup festivities.
As people from across Canada flood into Regina for the Grey Cup Festival and game on Sunday, the RPS has some advice on how to stay safe and how you can help prevent crime in the city.
In a press release, the RPS says, “Property crimes like Theft of Auto and Theft From Auto are usually crimes of opportunity. Preventing them means blocking the opportunity. It only takes a few minutes to safeguard your vehicle and the property inside.”
Residents and visitors should consider taking extra precautions when leaving their vehicles or property unattended.
Here’s a list of tips the RPS provided:
- Don’t leave your car running or unattended with keys in the ignition. That’s like an invitation to a would-be thief.
- When you park your car, take a few seconds to look around. Remove items of value from plain view. Even everyday items like sunglasses, spare change, or a garage door opener might be “of value” to someone. It’s best to remove even the smaller, ordinary items.
- When you leave your parked car, make sure the doors are locked.
- Never leave a wallet or purse in your car when you leave. Your credit or debit cards could be used immediately, especially if you have a “tap” function on your cards.
- If possible, park in well-lit, well-traveled areas. If you see suspicious activity, call The Regina Police Service. If you see a crime in progress, call 9-1-1.
