It was a record-breaking month in July for SARCAN.
The provincial recycling collection agency says 61 million containers were turned in to SARCAN depots across Saskatchewan.
Communications manager Sean Homenick says that demand hasn’t slowed down heading into August.
“In Saskatoon and Regina, we’re looking at hour, to hour-and-a-half waits at some of our locations depending on the day of the week,” Homenick said. “In some of those smaller cities like North Battleford, Prince Albert, and Moose Jaw, the lines are still there as well.”
Homenick says drop-and-go service has seen an increase in usage since depots re-opened in mid-June.
“It provides the lowest amount of contact and, usually, by far the quickest way to visit SARCAN,” Homenick said. “Customers have been using it in droves; some people for their first time, some people have used it multiple times since we’ve reopened.”
Staffing numbers have also increased to help deal with the demand. While normal staff numbers sit at 700 for this time of year, Homenick says 980 people are currently working for SARCAN.
