Man plans to burn his house after mass stabbing on the James Smith Cree Nation and Weldon

Brian Burns says nearly three months after his wife and son were killed in a mass stabbing in Saskatchewan there is no place to call home.

The September stabbing rampage left 11 people dead and 18 injured on the James Smith Cree Nation and in the nearby village of Weldon, northeast of Saskatoon

Since then, Brian Burns has been living in a hotel with his surviving children and says they intend to burn down the home where his wife, Bonnie, and son Gregory were killed.

He has been told they will get a ready-to-move home but doesn’t know when it will arrive.

Chief Wally Burns says he expects three additional families are struggling with the decision about what to do with their homes.

He says the First Nation is trying to find solutions, but it will rely on funding from Ottawa.

Indigenous Services Canada has not responded to a request for comment.
