The amount of overdoses in Regina continues to grow and is once again prompting the Regina Police Service to urge the public to be aware of illegal drugs in the community.
From Tuesday, November 10 to Friday, November 13, police in Regina have responded to five overdoses. Four of those instances resulted in death.
From the start of the year to Nov. 13, there have been 935 overdose events known to RPS, resulting in 82 apparent deaths. Of the 935 cases, police have attended 354 and administered Narcan 59 times.
The Regina Police Service has compiled a list of signs people should watch out for when there is an opioid overdose:
• Difficulty walking/talking/staying awake
• Blue lips or nails
• Very small pupils
• Cold and clammy skin
• Dizziness and confusion
• Extreme drowsiness
• Choking, gurgling or snoring sounds
• Slow, weak or no breathing
• Inability to wake up, even when shaken or shouted at.
Police are also reminding the public of the Good Samaritan Drug Overdose Act. It protects anyone who is experiencing, or anyone who is present when someone else is experiencing, a drug overdose from charges for possession of a controlled substance, when they call 9-1-1 for help.
