Landspout tornado touches down near Lake Lenore, more wild weather expected in Sask.

Some more severe weather hit parts of Saskatchewan Friday, as a landspout tornado touched down near Lake Lenore.

Environment Canada meteorologist Justin Shaer, says that despite it being labelled as a tornado, landspouts are usually not too destructive.

“They typically don’t last very long, although they can toss loose objects around, they’re not quite as strong as what we’d see with more intense tornadoes,” said Shaer. “I still treat them seriously, and dodge and get out of the way, and get to cover when I see one, but the winds that are typically reported with them, and the damage, is very minimal compared to what we’d see with bigger storms.”

A tornado warning was issued for the Langenburg area Friday, and Shaer says that even though no tornadoes formed, the area still saw quarter-sized hail in Broadview and nearly 50 mm of rain in the Preeceville/Langenburg area.

Shaer says severe weather is forecast for the northern part of the province Saturday.

“We are going to be issuing some severe thunderstorm watches for the northern grain belt part of Saskatchewan today, pretty much Yellowhead corridor north, from Meadow Lake down to about Humboldt,” said Shaer. “We could be expecting some large hail, strong winds, and possibly tornadoes with thunderstorms later today.”

Melfort, Tisdale, and Prince Albert are included in the warning area as well.
