Riders’ O’Day a fan of 2021 draft format, meanwhile 2021 schedule expected on Friday

Saskatchewan Roughriders Vice President and General Manager Jeremy O’Day, was on the SportsCage Thursday afternoon.

For 2021, the CFL says a six round draft will take place instead of the traditional eight.

The draft order will be determined by a random draw that is equally weighted across the nine CFL clubs.

Teams traditionally pick players in an order based on their records from the previous season.

It will also be a snake format.

O’Day said it’s a creative idea that’s fair across the board.

“It’s unique and it’s different, O’Day said. “I think when we had conversations everyone was in agreement that this was the best way to do it because obviously we don’t know the results of the 2020 season, so in fairness to everyone lets just go with a random draw,” O’Day added.

It’s also no secret that Mosaic Stadium would be in full preparations for the Grey Cup game that was supposed to be played on Sunday.

The Riders had full intentions of making this a season much like 2013 was.

O’Day said you can’t help but think a little about what should have been this week.

“I mean you’re just constantly thinking about something like Wednesday, when the weather was so nice and we could’ve practiced outside for day one, so you do think about it a little bit, it’s hard not too,” O’Day said.

Meanwhile more optimism for 2021 is expected to be created on Friday, as it’s widely expected that CFL Commissioner Randy Ambrosie will release a non-traditional schedule for the upcoming season.

There are multiple reports of what that might look like, but according to Sportsnet’s Arash Madani, travel will be limited with teams not visiting every stadium, which could add up to two less west verses east games.

What is perhaps the biggest mystery though is if fans will be in attendance for any of those games.

That is something that remains as debatable as who would’ve won the Grey Cup this Sunday.
