Jacobs & Hasselborg win Grand Slam of Curling’s Canadian Open

The venue may change, but the winners seemingly don’t.

The Grand Slam of Curling saw familiar winners when the Canadian Open ended in Yorkton on Sunday as Brad Jacobs and Sweden’s Anna Hasselborg each won their third straight event.

Jacobs beat John Epping 6-5 to win the event and take home first place prize money of $35,000. He is the fourth skip to win three straight events joining Kevin Martin, Brendan Bottcher and Glenn Howard. It is also the seventh Slam win for a rink he has skipped.

“There’s no doubt these events are extremely difficult to win. It’s hard to win one let alone multiple. The teams are fantastic, especially on the men’s side. There is so much parity among the Canadian men and a few of the Europeans, so it’s difficult.” Jacobs told Sportsnet after the game.

Meanwhile, Hasselborg joined Rachel Homan as women’s rinks to win three straight events as her Swedish foursome beat Min-Ji Kim of South Korea 7-5 in an extra end to take home first place prize money of $35,000.  It capped off a week where Hasselborg admitted she thought the team didn’t play its best.

“To be honest, we struggled this week but what is cool with this team is we find a way to just back up each other and pull out some really great wins.” Hasselborg said. ” I’m really, really proud of the team effort this week and really proud of how we are putting the playoffs together.”

Jacobs and Hasselborg now aim to make it four straight when the Grand Slam of Curling season resumes with the P Players’ Championship, April 7-12 in Toronto.
