Some support is coming in from organizations in Saskatchewan following the government’s expanded COVID-19 measures announced on Wednesday afternoon.
Following the announcement, the Regina and District Chamber of Commerce said they support the province’s expanded guidelines, including their decision to not completely close down the economy like what has happened in other provinces.
John Hopkins, CEO of the Regina and District Chamber of Commerce, suggested it’s important for the government to not shut down the economy, which would be devastating for many employees and businesses.
“We think it would have a serious impact. But at the same time, there is a balance the government is trying to hit and we support that in terms of protecting people against the virus,” he said.
“It’s not like we are waiting a month and then making a decision. The premier and the government have been very active in terms of making decisions and applying further restrictions if necessary.”
Hopkins said the chamber is asking citizens to follow the new guidelines in order to help to flatten the COVID-19 curve. He understands it has been a difficult several months, but he also appreciates the work from the government in that time.
“We are very respectful of the government’s position when they look at the data and make decisions,” explained Hopkins. “Again, the biggest thing for us is not going through a shut down of the economy.”
Hopkins also pointed to the “light at the end of the tunnel”, saying there are advancements being made to create a vaccine which he hopes will bring everyone to the other side of the pandemic next year.
