On this day 136 years ago, Louis Riel’s death occurred. To recognize Riel and the Metis Nation, today has been marked as Louis Riel Day.

At the RCMP Headquarters in Regina this morning, the Metis Nation Flag was raised.

Metis Nation- Saskatchewan Western Region 3 Regional Director Wendy Gervais noted that the Metis Nation and the RCMP have long history together. “Many of our citizens 150 years ago were apart of the RCMP, they worked hand in hand.” Gervais added “Many of our elders look at the RCMP as apart of that piece of history and it’s time to move forward.”

With their longstanding history, Gervais noted that it’s important for the Metis Nation and the RCMP to continue to have a strong working relationship. “As we move forward to ensure that the RCMP, to ensure that society is really forged with Metis identity and culture, that educational piece and they know who we are and understand who we are and to ensure that our communities are safe for everyone.

Saskatchewan RCMP Commanding Officer Assistant Commissioner Rhonda Blackmore said that it is important to recognize the importance of contributions of the Metis Nation and is looking forward to building on their relationship.

Blackmore added that the raising the Metis Nation flag at RCMP Headquarters is very significant. “It symbolizes that forging forward that really strong relationship with Metis Nation and recognizing the importance of working collectively together so that we are providing the best possible policing services while recognizing those unique aspects of Metis Nation.”

Along with the flag raising ceremonies in Regina, there was also ceremonies that took place today in Saskatoon and Prince Albert.
