Randy Weekes becomes new Speaker

Before getting down to business for a short two-week session of the Saskatchewan Legislature, MLA’s had to select a Speaker and there will be a change.

Randy Weekes, the Saskatchewan Party MLA for Biggar,  defeated five others including Mark Docherty who was looking to continue in the role.

Weekes is the longest-serving Saskatchewan Party MLA having first been elected in 1999.

Two of the others who were looking to become Speaker were Lisa Lambert and Nadine Wilson.  If one of them had gotten the honour, they would have become the first woman in Saskatchewan history to serve as Speaker
