Latest crop report says Sask harvest reaches 28 percent

The latest crop report says harvest is advancing quickly across Saskatchewan.

Provincial crops specialist Shannon Friesen says 28 percent of the crop is in the bin, up from 15 percent last week and well ahead of the 5 year average of 22 percent.

Harvest ranges from 50 percent complete in the southwest, 39 percent in the southeast to 3 percent in the northwest.

There was little significant rain, although Hudson Bay received 37 millimeters.

Topsoil moisture conditions continue to deterioriate due to hot weather, strong winds and lack of moisture.

Topsoil moisture is rated 2 percent surplus, 32 percent adequate, 47 percent short and 19 percent very short.

Most crop loss this past week was due to diseases like ergot, lack of moisture and strong winds.

There were some reports of light frost but damage appears to be minimal.

Friesen says many farmers have had field and combine fires due to the dry conditions.

She says reported yields so far are about average but hot dry weather has taken a toll on some crops.
