Environment and Climate Change Canada has issued a freezing rain warning for Regina.

Due to a low-pressure system from Alberta, Most of Southern Saskatchewan is expected to be hit with freezing rainfall throughout today.

The freezing rain will begin in the western side of the province this morning and then it’ll spread into Regina early this afternoon, then to the Manitoba border by late afternoon.

Some areas under the freezing rain warning including Regina and sections of the Trans-Canada highway will see more than 6 hours of freezing precipitation, creating extremely hazardous travel conditions.

Some areas may see temperatures remain or rise above zero, with will result in just heavy rainfall in those areas instead of freezing rain.

However, travelers should still exercise extreme caution, as the transition to freezing rain and ice-covered surfaces may occur without warning.

Road closures and power outages are highly likely later today.

Surfaces such as highways, roads, walkways, and parking lots will become icy, slippery, and hazardous.

Ice build-up may cause tree branches to break.

Public Safety Canada encourages everyone to make an emergency plan and get an emergency kit with drinking water, food, medicine, a first-aid kit, and a flashlight.

The rain is expected to end for most areas this evening.
