New funding coming for Sask. vet college

An inter-provincial agreement between Saskatchewan, Manitoba and British Columbia means more than $134-million in funding for USask’s Western College of Veterinary Medicine over the next 5 years.

It’s a renewal of a partnership that began the WCVM more than 50 years ago.

Dr. Melissa Just, Interim Provost and Vice-president Academic, says the college continues to strengthen the university’s impact in agriculture and animal health, comparative medicine, public health, toxicology and environmental sustainability.

She adds that the WCVM is globally recognized for its high quality graduates, its innovative research and its specialized veterinary medical centre.

In 2017, the Alberta government announced it would stop its funding after the 2019-20 academic year, and would instead support the University of Calgary’s Faculty of Veterinary medicine.

The WCVM was jointly established by the 4 western provinces in 1963.
