Holiday matching campaign raises $1.75-million for Saskatchewan food banks

Thirty-six food banks across Saskatchewan will benefit from the $1.75-million that were raised during the Food Banks of Saskatchewan holiday matching campaign.

Nutrien, who has who has supported the holiday matching campaign for the last 10 years, matched donations of up to $250,000 during the campaign.

Laurie O’Connor, Executive Director of Food Banks of Saskatchewan says the $1.75-million is right on par with amounts raised in previous years.

She says folks are really generous during the holiday season, especially for food banks. “I think that there’s an immediate and tangible, sort of understanding that when folks are hungry, we need to respond and so that’s what we’re seeing.”

Since 2010, the fundraising campaign has raised a total of $23.75-million for Saskatchewan food banks. During that time, Nutrien has contributed more than $7.75-million to the total.

The holiday goals at the Saskatoon Food Bank and Learning Centre were $500,000 and 500,000 pounds of food.

O’Connor says they were lucky enough to raise just over 520 thousand dollars and just a smidge under 500,000 pounds of food.

She says in Saskatoon, they’ll have their shelves full until about the end of March or so.

O’Connor adds people are continuing to make donations into the New Year following another successful holiday campaign.
