Regina Police make arrest in assault case east of downtown

A Regina man is facing charges after an alleged assault investigation led to the discovery of a loaded sawed-off .22 calibre rifle Monday night.

Regina Police were called to the 1600 block of Ottawa Street — just east of the city’s downtown — where early reports indicated a man threatened another man with a knife. Police saw a man who matched the suspect’s description fleeing the scene on a bicycle, which led to a police officer tackling the suspect off of the bike to the ground.

The suspect was found to have a sawed-off .22 calibre rifle and ammunition, as well as other knives and tools used for break and enter activity.

32-year-old Jarvais Cote faces a total of 10 charges:

  • Careless use of a firearm, weapon or prohibited device,
  • Possession of a weapon for a purpose dangerous to public peace,
  • Carrying concealed weapon,
  • Possession of a firearm knowing its possession is unauthorized,
  • Possession of a prohibited or restricted firearm with ammunition,
  • Possession of a firearm obtained by crime,
  • Obstruct peace officer,
  •  Possession of firearm or ammunition contrary to prohibition order,
  • Assault,
  • Breach of recognizance (X2).

Cote appeared in court Tuesday.
