Household Hazardous Waste Days happening this weekend

Free Household Hazardous Waste Days is on this weekend at Regina’s Public Works Yards.

The event gives Regina residents the chance to drop off items like chemicals, fertilizers, aerosols, batteries, light, propane tanks, and others they may have around the house.

Janet Aird with the City says the weekend is a huge help in reducing the amount of hazardous waste disposed of irresponsibly.

“There aren’t a lot of avenues for disposal of oil from if you change your oil at home, if you have solvents you haven’t used,” said Aird. “There aren’t residential outlets for that, and this provides an outlet for the residents to safely get rid of that stuff.”

Aird says the weekend is usually pretty busy, so people should be prepared to wait.

“There’s typically a bit of a lineup, it is very well received,” said Aird. “We do encourage residents to come out a little bit later in the day, the lineup tends to be busier in the morning. It’s very well attended and it stays pretty consistent throughout the day.”

Due to COVID-19, this year’s event will be slightly different from years past as people will be required to stay in their vehicle at all times, having their hazardous waste in their trunks or truck beds. Public works is asking people to not attend if they are sick.

The event kicks off Saturday morning  until 4:00 pm, and continues Sunday from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm.
