14 new cases of COVID-19 have been announced by the province on Monday. The 14 new cases combined with nine recoveries puts the active case count total in the province at 149.
While Regina has three of the 14 new cases, seven other are in the Central East zone, three are in Saskatoon and one is in the Far North West.
Eight people are in hospital with seven of those eight receiving inpatient care in Saskatoon. Nine more recoveries means a total of 1,719 residents have recovered from the virus.
During a teleconference call with members of the media on Monday, Chief Medical Health Officer Dr. Saqib Shahab said he is concerned by the higher than normal COVID-19 numbers after outbreaks were declared in the Yorkton area earlier in the day.
He said while it’s positive that public health has worked to link case contacts, he encourages people to continue taking precautions when they are out in public.
“While we will see an increase in cases, we don’t want to see large surges that are happening in other parts of the world,” said Shahab.
The Yorkton COVID-19 outbreaks have resulted in a rapidly involving investigation with up to 100 contacts so far. The outbreaks have been declared at Yorkton Regional High School, Pumphouse Athletic Club and Yorkton Regional Health Centre.
Dr. Shahab said the contact list may continue to grow as contact tracing continues for the area.
While he would not recommend any changes in people’s routines when following COVID-19 health guidelines, he does want residents to pay close attention to close and extended household contacts.
“We need to make sure that people we meet on a regular basis are the same consistent group of family and friends, whether we are planning a Thanksgiving dinner or other activities over the fall.”
2,236 tests were done in Saskatchewan on Sunday bringing the provincial total to 188,068.
