Livestock producer from Caron is new President of Sask Stock Growers Association

The new president of the Saskatchewan Stock Growers Association is a livestock producer from Caron, about 100 kilometers west of Regina.

Kelcy Elford says producers have been hit hard this year.

He points to meatpacking plant shut-downs and a backlog in processing cattle during the coronavirus.

He says the backlog is slowly being cleared.

Elford says resolutions at this week’s annual meeting called for plant based proteins to avoid meat terminology and support for the use of strychnine to control gophers.

A third resolution sought tighter controls on the use of traps and snares around livestock and cow dogs.

Elford was elected president at the Stock Growers annual meeting this week, held over the internet because of the covid-19 outbreak.
