The Saskatchewan Health Authority and the Saskatchewan government are being sued by the parents of a 20-year-old man who committed suicide earlier in May, hours after being forcibly removed from a Regina hospital.

Samwel Uko had been to the General Hospital on the morning of his death after his cousin took him there, but he was told he could not go in because of restrictions surrounding COVID-19.

He later called 911 and was taken by police to hospital, but he was removed by four security guards when he could not give his name and details. Hours after that, he went to Wascana Park where he killed himself by drowning in the lake across from the Legislative Building.

In a statement of claim issued by Regina lawyer Tony Merchant, Uko’s parents are seeking damages for such things as grief, loss of companionship, and loss of earnings.
