The University of Regina Rams appear to be set at the game’s most important position.

On Thursday afternoon, the team announced they have received a committment from Moose Jaw’s Sawyer Buettner.

The quarterback, who played for the Regina Thunder for three years, had committed to the University of Ottawa and had a fantastic first season throwing for 1,470 yards and 14 TD’s in 2018 before getting injured early last year costing him the season.

Rams head coach Steve Bryce says it was a case of Buettner wanting to return to Saskatchewan and that once that desire was made public, he started putting the wheels in motion to make it happen at the U of R.

“We had recruited Sawyer in the past, but he decided to try Ottawa.” Bryce said. “He said he had nothing against our program, but he wanted to try something new. He sent me a text saying he would like to talk to me because he was taking some classes at the U of R and he wanted to finish his USports career here.  When that happened, we were more than ready to sit down with him.”

Buettner, who has two years of eligibility remaining, will go into camp behind Josh Donnelly.  Donnelly had an outstanding rookie season for the Rams throwing for 1,965 yards and 12 touchdowns in six games.  Bryce says Donnelly is still his number one guy on the depth chart and that he can’t wait for the competition.

“Josh is our guy and he will go into camp as our starter.” Bryce said while on the Sportscage. “We have a lot of confidence in Josh.  We know he is going to get better and better and become more of a leader with our team than he is now. When Sawyer came to us, we said we needed to have a discussion with Josh and our other quarterbacks which is something he agreed to.  Everyone of those quarterbacks said they were excited to add him to our stable so I am excited to see how this goes. I think our team just got better.”
