Number of smoke hours soars in 2023

Wildfire smoke has gotten into the lungs of Reginans – and people living near many weather stations all over the province – at a record pace.

According to preliminary records from Environment and Climate Change Canada, between May 1 and Sept. 5, Regina crushed our old record of smoke hours with 223, topping 2021’s 184.

A smoke hour is considered when visability is reduced to 9.7 km or less in smoke.

Saskatoon, Prince Albert and La Ronge each beat their smoke hours records, with La Ronge residents getting 802 smoke hours this year compared to their old record of 513 set in 2015.
