Crop damage hail claims pour in from northwest Saskatchewan

Crop damage hail claims are starting to pour in from the northwest corner of the Saskatchewan grainbelt.

The president of the Canadian Crop Hail Association, Rick Omelchenko, says claims are coming in from farmers from Meadow Lake through Shellbrook in the northwest part of the province.

He says there were plow winds and hail stones ranging in size from pea to golf ball.

He says results are very preliminary and its too early to determine the number of claims.

He says the smaller stones can actually cause more crop damage because of wind speed and intensity.

He adds southwest Saskatchewan was hit by hail late last month, including Maple Creek, Assiniboia, Willowbunch, Ogema, Gravelbourg, Elrose and Rosetown.
